Halloween is the second most common holiday for pets to go missing, with July 4th being the first, due to the stress caused by fireworks. The increased activity of trick-or-treaters, constant doorbell ringing, spooky decorations, and strange noises can overwhelm pets, making them panic and run away if they have a chance. Here is how you can help Keeping Dogs Calm - Halloween
Reasons pets go missing during Halloween
1 Noise sensitivity: The constant ringing of doorbells, knocking, and loud noises can startle pets, causing them to panic.
2 Open doors: The continuous opening and closing of doors for trick-or-treaters and deliveries can create an opportunity for pets to slip out unnoticed.
3 Stress and fear: The overall spooky atmosphere can be very stressful for animals, causing them to bolt in an attempt to escape what they perceive as a threat.
How to keep your pet safe on Halloween
1 Keep pets indoors: A safe, quiet room away from the front door is the best option.
2 Create a safe space: Set up a comfortable area with their bed, toys, and maybe some soft music or a white noise machine to help mask outside sounds.
3 Update ID and microchip: Ensure your pet's ID tags are up-to-date and their microchip registration is current so you can be reunited quickly if they do get lost.
4 Limit costume use: If you choose to put your pet in a costume, make sure it's comfortable, doesn't impede their breathing or movement, and that they are not left unattended.
5 Supervise outdoor time: If your dog needs to go outside, keep them on a leash and supervise them closely.
6 Be mindful when opening the door: Greet trick-or-treaters while your pet is secured in a back room or on a leash to prevent them from escaping when the door opens.
